Dong Ji Collective: emerging light from the longest night

Past event

By Invitation of Heesoo Kwon x Karen Cheung: Leymusoom 품앗이 (pum-as-i) at ICA San Francisco’s Meantime Residency, Dong Ji Collective will host their first ritual emerging light from the longest night on 광복절(8/15, National Liberation Day of Korea).

Dong Ji Collective is a Korean diasporic artist collective made up of 7 artists based in the SF Bay Area– Youjin Han, Jane Kang, Danna Kim, Nahyun Kim, Heesoo Kwon, Julie Moon, and Sun Park. On August 15, 2023, the artists will introduce the collective, share about our individual practices, and showcase a group ritual based on an ancient Korean dance, Ganggangsullae (강강술래). Dong Ji Collective’s interpretation of this music and dance is composed and directed by Julie Moon, who envisions this process as a way to connect with friends and ancestors. Viewers are invited to participate in this first demonstration.

By introducing the Dong Ji Collective and sharing the Ganggangsullae ritual on August 15th, marking the National Liberation Day of Korea, the artists aim to remember the historical use of Ganggangsullae as a protective measure against Japanese occupation on the anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. This day also coincides with the new moon—a dark night—from which camaraderie and community emerge as a guiding light.

The Dong Ji Collective invites you to learn more about our members, the work we do together, and participate in a shared ritual.
